Double exposure is a powerful artistic technique that layers two (or more) images onto a single frame, creating surreal blends, symbolic fusions, and dreamlike compositions. It originated as a happy accident in early photography but evolved into a deliberate tool for storytelling, especially in surrealism and conceptual art.

•  Victorian Era (1800s): Early experiments on glass plates or film often produced “spirit photography” — ghostly figures overlaid on portraits, sometimes intentionally for supernatural effects. 
•  Early 20th Century: Surrealists like Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy embraced it for dreamlike, boundary-pushing imagery. Photographers such as Jerry Uelsmann mastered darkroom compositing, while others like Gjon Mili used it for motion and energy. 
•  Modern Era: Digital tools and AI have democratized it, allowing precise control while retaining the ethereal quality. Contemporary artists like Andreas Lie (nature fused with animals) and Luke Gram (human-nature blends) continue the tradition.
