Google Pixel Scam Detection Could Cover Outgoing Calls
Android Authority reported on August 14 that Google plans to extend Scam Detection on Pixel phones to cover outgoing calls. Currently, the feature only scans incoming calls and must be manually enabled.
A string enableSharpieOnOutgoingCalls was found in the beta Google Phone app code. Sharpie is the internal codename for Scam Detection, indicating Google is preparing the capability for outbound call scenarios.
Why It Matters
With detection limited to incoming calls, scammers could theoretically trick victims into dialing first and then conduct the scam during the call. Extending detection to outgoing calls would offer protection in user-initiated scenarios.
The report suggests this change reduces the space for scammers to evade detection. If Scam Detection only handles incoming calls, fraudsters could first induce users to dial out, then carry out the scam over the call.
